"Is this price inclusive of GST or exclusive of GST?" is one of the most common points of confusion in Indian business pricing — and the two answers require genuinely different arithmetic, not just a different label on the same number.

GST-exclusive price: tax added on top

A GST-exclusive price is the amount before tax — what you'd see on a cost sheet, a B2B quotation, or a service rate card before GST is applied. GST is calculated as a percentage of this amount and added on top to reach the final price the customer pays.

Formula and example

Final Amount = Base Amount + (Base Amount × GST% ÷ 100). At ₹1,000 base and 18% GST: Final = 1,000 + 180 = ₹1,180.

GST-inclusive price: tax already built in

A GST-inclusive price is the final, all-in amount a customer actually sees and pays — most retail price tags, e-commerce checkout totals, and MRPs work this way. The GST portion is already inside that number; it hasn't been added afterward.

Formula and example

Base Amount = Inclusive Amount ÷ (1 + GST% ÷ 100). At ₹1,180 inclusive and 18% GST: Base = 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000, so GST = ₹180.

How to add GST (exclusive → inclusive)

  1. Start with the base (pre-tax) amount.
  2. Multiply by the GST rate ÷ 100 to get the GST amount.
  3. Add the GST amount to the base amount to get the final, GST-inclusive total.

How to extract GST from a total (inclusive → exclusive)

  1. Start with the GST-inclusive (final) amount.
  2. Divide it by (1 + GST rate ÷ 100) to back-solve the base amount.
  3. Subtract the base amount from the inclusive amount to get the GST amount.

Why you can't just subtract the percentage

GST is a percentage of the base amount, not of the final amount — so subtracting 18% of ₹1,180 directly gives the wrong answer. ₹1,180 − 18% × 1,180 = ₹967.60, not the correct base of ₹1,000. The reverse formula divides by (1 + rate ÷ 100) specifically because the tax was calculated on the smaller base figure, not the larger total.

These use the current GST 2.0 slabs (0%, 5%, 18%, and 40% for demerit/luxury goods, plus a special 3% rate on gold and silver), effective 22 September 2025. See our full guide on how to calculate GST for the underlying formulas and the CGST/SGST/IGST split.

When each calculation is useful

SituationUse this calculation
Quoting a service fee or B2B price before taxGST-exclusive (add GST on top)
Pricing a retail product with a fixed, all-in MRPGST-inclusive (work backward)
Reconciling a bank credit or receipt total against your booksGST-inclusive (work backward)
Building a quotation or estimate from your cost priceGST-exclusive (add GST on top)

If your starting point is specifically a total amount you've already received or seen on a receipt, our reverse GST guide walks through that direction in more depth with additional worked examples.

Frequently asked questions

What does GST-inclusive mean?

A GST-inclusive amount already has GST built into it — it's the final, customer-facing price. To find the pre-tax base and the GST portion, you work backward from the inclusive amount rather than adding tax on top of it.

What does GST-exclusive mean?

A GST-exclusive amount is the price before tax. GST is calculated on this amount and added on top to arrive at the final, GST-inclusive amount the customer pays.

How do I convert a GST-inclusive price to GST-exclusive?

Divide the inclusive amount by (1 + GST rate ÷ 100) to get the exclusive (base) amount. For example, a ₹1,180 inclusive amount at 18% GST divides to a ₹1,000 base amount.
