What is a rent receipt?
A rent receipt confirms that a landlord received a rent payment from a tenant — it records who received it, who paid it, for which property and rent period, when, and how it was paid. Unlike a rental agreement, it does not establish the terms of the tenancy; it simply acknowledges that a payment already happened.
How to create a rent receipt
- Enter the receipt number and receipt date.
- Enter the landlord/owner's details.
- Enter the tenant's details.
- Enter the rental property's address and location.
- Add the rent period, payment date, amount and payment method.
- Preview the receipt and download it as a PDF.
Rent period vs. payment date
The rent period describes what the payment is for (e.g. a specific month), while the payment date is when the payment was actually made. These are tracked separately so the receipt stays accurate even when rent is paid a little early or a little late.
Important notes
This tool generates a standard rent receipt document. It does not calculate GST or TDS, does not verify a payment with any bank or payment provider, and does not provide legal or tax advice — for HRA claims, TDS obligations, or any other situation-specific question, consult a qualified tax professional. For security deposit terms and other tenancy conditions, refer to your rental agreement, not this receipt.
Frequently asked questions
What is a rent receipt?
A rent receipt is a document a landlord gives a tenant acknowledging that rent was paid — it records who paid, how much, for which rental property and rent period, when the payment was made, and how. It is an acknowledgement of a payment already received, not a request for payment.
Is this rent receipt generator free?
Yes. Creating, previewing and downloading a rent receipt with this tool is free and does not require an account.
Can I generate a rent receipt without an account?
Yes. You can enter the landlord, tenant, property and payment details, preview the receipt and download the PDF without signing up. An account is only needed if you choose to save the receipt to Business Software.
When is a rent receipt useful?
Rent receipts are commonly used to support a tenant's HRA (House Rent Allowance) claim, and as a general record of rent payments for both the landlord and tenant. Whether a receipt is required in your specific situation can depend on your circumstances — consult a tax professional if you're unsure.
What's the difference between the rent period and the payment date?
The rent period is the month (or date range) the payment is for, e.g. "September 2026". The payment date is the actual date the payment was made, which can be earlier or later than the period it covers — for example, rent paid a few days late, or paid in advance. This tool tracks both separately and never assumes one from the other.
Why would I add a payment method or reference number?
Recording the payment method (cash, bank transfer, UPI, cheque, card) and an optional reference (a UPI transaction ID, cheque number or bank reference) makes the receipt more useful as a record for both parties. Entering these does not verify with any bank or payment provider that the transaction occurred — that remains the landlord and tenant's own responsibility.
Does this tool calculate GST or TDS on rent?
No. Rent receipts for residential rent normally don't carry GST, so this tool doesn't add any GST/tax calculation. TDS on rent has conditional rules that depend on factors like the amount and who is paying — this tool doesn't attempt to apply or advise on those rules. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
Does the tool save my receipt data?
No. Your receipt details are used only in your browser and on the server for the moment it takes to generate the PDF — they are not saved to a database or a Business Software account unless you choose a future save workflow.
