What is a GST invoice?

A GST invoice is the standard document a GST-registered business issues for a taxable sale. Alongside the usual seller, customer and item details, it separately shows the taxable value and the GST charged on it — CGST and SGST for a sale within the same state, or IGST for a sale across states.

How to create a GST invoice

  1. Enter your business details, including your GSTIN if you have one.
  2. Enter your customer's details and, if applicable, their GSTIN.
  3. Add the invoice number, date and place of supply.
  4. Add one or more line items with quantity, rate and GST rate.
  5. Preview the invoice — CGST/SGST or IGST is calculated automatically.
  6. Download the invoice as a PDF.

How GST is calculated

Tax treatment is determined by comparing your business's state to the invoice's place of supply. When they match, GST is split evenly into CGST and SGST. When they differ, the full GST rate is charged as IGST instead — never both. Each line item's taxable value is its quantity × rate, less any line discount, and GST is calculated on that taxable value.

Important notes

This tool covers standard GST invoices for goods and services at the 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% slabs. It does not generate e-invoices/IRNs, e-way bills, export or SEZ invoices, or handle composition-scheme or TDS/TCS scenarios. GSTIN entries are checked for correct format only — this tool does not verify GSTIN registration status with any government system. This tool is provided for document-generation convenience; businesses are responsible for ensuring their invoices comply with their applicable GST requirements. For complex or unusual transactions, consult a qualified tax professional.

Frequently asked questions

What is a GST invoice?

A GST invoice is a bill a registered business issues for a sale of goods or services, showing the taxable value and the GST charged (CGST + SGST for an intra-state sale, or IGST for an inter-state sale).

Is this GST invoice generator free?

Yes. Creating, previewing and downloading a GST invoice with this tool is free and does not require an account.

Can I generate a GST invoice without an account?

Yes. You can enter your business and customer details, add items, preview the invoice and download the PDF without signing up. An account is only needed if you choose to save the invoice to Business Software.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

CGST and SGST apply together on an intra-state sale (seller and place of supply in the same state), split evenly. IGST applies on an inter-state sale instead, in place of CGST and SGST — never alongside them.

Can I download the GST invoice as a PDF?

Yes. Once you've entered your invoice details, you can preview it and download a professional A4 PDF.

Does the tool save my invoice data?

No. Your invoice details are used only in your browser and on the server for the moment it takes to generate the PDF — they are not saved to a database or a Business Software account unless you choose a future save workflow.
